We are glad to report that our efforts to get a delay in the marijuana law had an impact.

Last week, just before the Legislature and Governor Baker left for New Year’s festivities, they passed a six-month cannabis-1254745_640delay of certain parts of the Marijuana Law. This prevents businesses that want to grow, process, distribute, and sell marijuana from operating.

The legislature’s delay is a clear indication of the law’s ill-considered and lax regulation of a dangerous drug, as the legislature clearly stated that portions of the law need to be fixed.

MFI welcomes this delay as we prepare guidance on how local activists can work in their communities to pass restrictions on when and where marijuana establishments can operate in town. Local communities may also have the ability to stop any marijuana businesses from being allowed to operate at all within their borders.

Our preparations are nearly complete, so stay tuned for how you can engage your community.
