MFI President Kris Mineau released the following statement after the US Senate failed to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The final vote was 61-38, short of the 2/3 majority (67 votes) needed for ratification.

“Despite garnering the support of both John Kerry and Scott Brown, the misconceived United Nations Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (UNCRPD) failed to gain enough votes to be ratified by the United States Senate today. We are disappointed that Senator Brown chose to support the treaty despite the serious problems its ratification would cause for parental rights and U.S. sovereignty. The overall goal of the convention may be noble, but its very real threats are just too high of a price to pay. We are glad that enough senators agreed with this assessment, and voted against the UNCRPD.”
