This week, Gov. Mitch Daniels (R-Indiana), signed the nation’s first state law that removes taxpayer funding from entities that promote abortion, including Planned Parenthood. This law is a great victory not only for the pro-life movement, but also for women and preborn children especially. Taxpayers can also rest easier in Indiana knowing that their hard-earned money is no longer going towards organizations that promote abortion.

As expected, Planned Parenthood of Indiana is seeking a restraining order to stop the law from going into effect, thus cutting off $2million of the $3 million it receives. Today, a federal judge declined the request to issue a temporary restraining order Without a court order, the law was set to go into effect immediately. Indiana also becomes the first state to prohibit the use of Medicaid at Planned Parenthood.

Two other provisions of the law move the deadline for women to receive abortions to 20 weeks and mandates that doctors tell patients that abortion has been linked to infertility.

Gov. Daniels responded to claims from abortion advocates that the law would cut funding from women for cancer detecting, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancies. He said his administration reviewed women’s access to services “and can confirm that all non-abortion services, whether family planning or basic women’s health, will remain readily available in every one of our 92 counties.”
